If you’re willing to get your hands a little dirty, there is so much food out there, ready to be grabbed! Morel mushrooms may be one of the most well-known, but they can be notoriously hard to find. But Spring foraging in New York can be easy. My favorite? The ramp! This is a type of wild allium (onion family) that tastes like a combination of onion and garlic. It’s quite easy to identify, too! Click here to be brought to my article on harvesting your own ramps. In the article, you will also find my note on sustainability and my video, so you can see what foraging them entails.
Now, what to do with all those delicious ramps? I have two of my favorite recipes for you! First is my cheesy ramp frittata, one of my favorites. If you don’t have ramps, you can also substitute in shallots or onion, along with your greens of choice. Another recipe I love – ramp pesto! This makes a to-die-for pasta sauce and has a fantastic garlic-y flavor. A bonus? You can save time and increase your sustainability by only foraging the leaves with this recipe.
News on the Barn
We are getting so close I can smell it! I don’t know about you, but I love the smell of an occupied barn – a good thing for me. We have our area all selected, and looked at to see what will need to be done to prep the land (grading and stone). We also know exactly what barn kit we will be ordering, and will be putting that order in soon. I chose to add wainscoting (that pretty different color at the bottom of a wall) and learned that it actually had a purpose! That extra lower layer of steel helps protect the main steel siding from things like weed whacking, rocks flying at it, etc. Because that steel will last a long time – unless it gets damaged and starts to rust. So my choice to add something “pretty” ended up being useful, hooray!
Spring Cleaning
Both necessary and dreaded. It always seems like there’s more to do, especially when you have a lot of land! But I’ve made my cleaning a little easier (and healthier) by making a switch. I try to be more environmentally friendly wherever I can, and I’ve found that Norwex is just that. No dangerous chemicals, and highly concentrated so they last a long time. My cupboard is less jumbled, less toxic, and more effective.
