We’re still at the starting end of establishing our herd. It will be great to have a large herd with plenty of kids hopping around! Centered above is my wether Caz, the first goat I ever got.
Kinder Does
Pronounced like kindergarten, these goats are great homestead animals. They were created by breeding a Pygmy buck with a Nubian doe. The combination ended up being a great dual-purpose breed- both their milk and meat production are fantastic! In our herd, we are trying to maintain that balance though we do lean more toward the meat side. Here are our current Kinders:
Persephone
Date of birth: 12/25/2020
Our first Kinder doe and she is a fine example of the breed. Solidly built and her dairy potential looks promising. Of course, she didn’t want her picture taken! Enjoy this temporary one (she is the cream/caramel doe in the background of Mirror’s photo).
Mirror
Date of birth: 5/13/2019
We got Mirror as an adult and she brings us genetics from the West Coast! She is a little short for the breed, but still a solid girl.
Jaina
Date of birth: 4/14/2022
A more dairy-looking type, but she has been a fast grower.
Hilda
Date of birth: 4/21/2022
Looking like a well-balanced doe.
Bailey
Date of birth: 3/28/2022
A smaller doe, but she was a quad. I look forward to seeing how she produces.
Pygmy Does
We also have two pygmy does. I had gotten Cinnamon before I decided on getting into the Kinder breed. And Baby is, well, her baby. Real original name, I know. We were going to sell her, but I decided on keeping her. I had always just referred to her as “Baby” so I wouldn’t name her and get attached… Well, the name stuck anyway!
Cinnamon
Date of Birth: 10/18/2019
The OG. She was my first doe in this herd. She may be small, but she doesn’t let anyone boss her around! She is a wonderful mother and has had two sets of twins so far.
Baby
Date of birth: 3/8/2022
The one I just couldn’t let go of. She is full of personality but tends to be the lowest-ranked goat in the group. Her mom always has her back though!
Kinder Bucks
Now the boys! We have two Kinder bucks currently.
Syrus
Date of birth: 3/2/2021
Our first Kinder buck. We’re not sure what to do with this guy- he hasn’t been able to sire any kids for us yet! He had a hard fight with Barberpole worms when he was younger, and we’re hoping he will be in better condition for the next round.
Ace
Date of birth: 3/4/2022
Our newer buck, he’s been growing well and we plan to use him on our next round as well.
Myotonic Bucks
We also have two Myotonic bucks. Many know them as “fainting” goats. These boys are able to bring some nice meaty quality into kids they sire.
Zebulon
Date of birth: 3/8/2019
This chunky hunk is a registered Myotonic and really lives up to his breed; he goes wood-leg any time he sees me with food! His eyes are partially blue and I hope we can get some blue-eyed kids from him.
Turbo
Date of birth: 6/15/2021
This buck is Zebulon’s son, and his dam had a little bit of Pygmy in her. He also exhibits the “fainting” trait, though not as intensely as his sire. Turbo has sired a set of twins with Cinnamon for us.
Netherland Dwarf
We have just one Netherland dwarf, and that is our wether Caz. He was one of the first goats I ever got and has earned his retirement with us.
Cazimir
Our freeloader Caz. He loves to be the boss and is also our only goat that doesn’t mind being alone!
